The title quote, of course, comes from Tolstoy; ‘All happy families are alike; each unhappy family is unhappy in its own way.’ That’s a great jumping off point for an observational comedy drama, and Haroula Rose’s follow up to her accomplished debut Once Upon A River more than lives up to that promise. It’s the kind of indie that’s worth shouting from the rooftops about; real characters, honest, uncontrived storytelling, sincere performances, the kind of movie that leaves you feeling you’ve shared space and time with other people, not AI generated constructs approved by test marketers. If your cinematic tastes are more Whit Stillman and Elaine May than Brett Ratner and Michael Bay, All Happy Families is the film you should be checking out right now…..
