BFI Distribution is thrilled to announce the release of the highly anticipated British folk horror film, “Starve Acre,” in UK and Irish cinemas on 6 September 2024. Directed by BAFTA nominee Daniel Kokotajlo and starring Matt Smith and Morfydd Clark, “Starve Acre” is set to captivate audiences with its unsettling and atmospheric storytelling. Inspired by the award-winning novel of the same name written by Andrew Michael Hurley, this film promises to take viewers on a journey into the depths of darkness and superstition.
Unearthing a Primeval Tale
Set in 1970s rural Yorkshire, “Starve Acre” follows the seemingly idyllic life of Richard and Juliette Willoughby, whose world is turned upside down when their young son, Owen, starts behaving strangely. A tragic event shatters their happiness and drives a wedge between the couple. As grief consumes them, Richard becomes obsessed with a local folklore surrounding an ancient oak tree on their land, believing it possesses extraordinary powers. While Juliette seeks solace in the community, Richard’s relentless pursuit of the myth leads to an unexpected discovery that unleashes dark and sinister forces within their home. This revelation offers a disturbing possibility of reconnecting the fractured couple.
Director Daniel Kokotajlo describes “Starve Acre” as a film that aims to create a mood of nervousness, taking audiences on a rollercoaster ride of emotions. He explains, “English folk tales like ‘Starve Acre’ give you an opportunity to do that. It’s not just horror; it ends up in a weird, off-kilter place. It can be uncomfortably quiet and sensitive, then suddenly it slaps you in your face with its oddballness. That was the aim of this film: to create a mood of nervousness.”
A Stellar Cast and Filmmaking Team
“Starve Acre” boasts an impressive cast, with Matt Smith taking on the role of Richard Willoughby and Morfydd Clark portraying Juliette Willoughby. Smith, known for his roles in “Doctor Who” and “The Crown,” brings his talent and versatility to the character of Richard, a man consumed by his obsession. Clark, who has garnered critical acclaim for her performances in “Saint Maud” and “The Personal History of David Copperfield,” delivers a compelling portrayal of Juliette as she grapples with grief and seeks solace in her community.
The film is directed by Daniel Kokotajlo, a BAFTA-nominated filmmaker renowned for his debut feature “Apostasy.” Kokotajlo’s ability to delve into complex themes and create thought-provoking narratives is evident in his previous work, and “Starve Acre” is poised to showcase his unique storytelling style once again. The film is produced by Tessa Ross, Juliette Howell, and Emma Duffy, with music composed by Matthew Herbert.
A Season of Inspiration
In conjunction with the release of “Starve Acre,” Daniel Kokotajlo has curated a season of films and television programs that have inspired and influenced him. The season, titled “Roots, Rituals and Phastasmagoria,” will be showcased at BFI Southbank and BFI Player starting from 1 September. This special event will provide audiences with a deeper understanding of the director’s creative vision and the thematic elements that shape his work. Additionally, a BFI Player, BFI Blu-ray, and digital release of “Starve Acre” is scheduled for 21 October, allowing viewers to experience the film from the comfort of their own homes.
