Standing up for the indie is a big part of what we do; there are genres, and there are sub-genres, and then there are micro genres; there’s a specific kind of indie romcom that isn’t really a romcom at all, but you know it when you see it; it’s when they double if not triple down on the meet cute, the moment when a couple first set eyes on each other and realise that this may or may not be the big deal that they’ve been waiting for. The most famous example would have to be Richard Linklater’s Before Sunrise, a film that hits absolutely none of the romcom beats, but has a big romantic heart and constantly amuses by capturing the delicate feels of a couple tentatively discovering their connection to each other.
